Materazzi is one big arsehole. It is more or less confirmed that he provoked Zidane and apparently insulted him badly that led to the disgraceful act.

If you watch the video carefully, after tugging zizou's shirt, zizou annoyingly told him "if you so want my shirt badly, ill give it you after the game." Then Materazzi made some sarcastic comments and probably pushed it further, resulting in the infamous headbutt which will be remembered for sometime.
